The roll of film came from the Japanese military, and the photos showed Japanese troops partying after their victories in Vietnam, Singapore, and the Philippines. The reporter had obviously been bribed in exchange for the promise to publish them, and if the photos appeared in Chilean newspapers, they’d quickly spread, first throughout Latin America and then all over the world.
