Out on a Limb

I didn’t want to achieve despite myself. I didn’t want to defy anything. I just wanted to feel ordinary. To not overcompensate every day. I wanted to be bad at things and have people laugh at me because that’s life. I didn’t want pity.

He loved me in spite of; never because of.

“So…do we—do we get married?” “What?” I jump back. “No! What? Why would we get married? We don’t even know each other!” He sits straighter, blowing out a breath. “Sorry, I’m not sure what came over me just then.” “The ghost of your great-grandfather, evidently,” I say.

“Funny wife, happy life—that’s what I always say,” Ned adds from beside her. Bo gives me the smallest, briefest glance that asks about a hundred things. I agree, silently, to all of them.

Subtle foreshadowing

“And don’t call me Freddie,” I say, crossing my arms. “Sure thing, Frederick.”

She’s wearing leggings and a cute, oversized sweater with the word Velaris written across it. I think that’s from a favorite book of hers, but if I ask, we’ll never get out of here on time.

OH MY GOD OH MY GOD OHHHH MYYYY GODDDDDDD

“You want a kept woman,” I tease. “I certainly want to keep you.” He blanches as soon as the words leave his mouth.

“Maybe when they’re embarrassed. But you blush a lot…like when you’re happy too.” “It’s annoying,” I say, pulling my hair off my neck to cool down.

FINALLY SOMEONE GETS ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I know the timing isn’t exactly ideal, but if you lined up every other person in the world who I could’ve had a baby with, I’d choose you again.

It’s so much easier to communicate insecurities when you don’t need to communicate them at all. Isn’t that all we ever want? To be seen and heard? Validated, even when we’re not able to ask for it.

“I’d do it all over again to be at that party,” he says. “To meet you. To get Gus.”

“Who in this world matters the most to you?” “You,” I answer simply, pleading with him to hear me. What I said and all that it means. “You,” he repeats. “It’s you for me too. With a very close second,” he says, his eyes on my belly.

“You’re perfect, Win,” Bo says, as easily as breathing. “Of course I’d want them to have every part of you.”

Let me in, I want to say amidst the silence. Love me. Trust me. I won’t let you down. I swear it.

“You’ve given me so much, Win.”

And I’m tired of being scared. I long to be loved by a man like Bo. I long to love him, the way he deserves.

“I love you,” I say, squeezing his fingers again. “I’m fully, madly, deeply, and unquestionably in love with you.”

“You’ve seen me. Understood me like I’ve never been understood. And I see you now too. I see how truly lovely you are. More importantly, I believe it. With everything inside me, I believe you’re going to be gentle with my heart.”
