Until the Seven Sisters laughed and a world burst into being.
But they couldn’t stay forever. Before moving on, they chose a select few to watch over the world in their absence. To help these guardians love and protect their creation, the Seven Sisters gave them a gift. The gift of magic.
“You’re not a girl. You’re a witch.”
the thing I can’t forgive, the thing I will never understand, is how you could make me fall for you when all along you were in love with my brother.”
Her lies? What about his lies? “You want the truth?” Her own hurt bubbled up, like steam from a volcano ready to erupt. “This is the truth: I would have married you in a heartbeat, had you asked me. I would have married you knowing you would hand me over to my killers—or kill me yourself—the moment you found out what I was. That’s how pathetic I am, Gideon! That’s how desperately I wanted to be yours!” His brow creased as his eyes searched her face. “Then why say yes to my brother?”
was just a girl to Alex.”
“Someone to be loved and cherished and fought for. That’s why I said yes to him.”
“I’m not a girl to you, am I? I’m a witch, and always will be. Something to be hated and hunted down. Not cherished or protected. Not loved.” Rune waited for him to deny it. To contradict her.
If this was weakness, he wanted to be weak. If this was sin, let him be damned to hell.
We witches were given a precious gift, and with that gift comes a sacred task. The Ancients bestowed magic on us for one purpose: to use for the good, the true, and the beautiful.
“You are far worse than a thorn in my side,” he said, his dark eyes gleaming at her. “You are a knife in my heart.”
“And you’re a wolf I can’t outrun,”
“Not even in my sleep.”
“I’ll miss you the way a fox misses the wolf’s snapping jaws,”
“Live in the darkness too long, and eventually you won’t recognize the light,” he told her. “You’ll become like the monsters you hate.”
“It might look like weakness on the surface. But in truth, it’s tougher than steel. Love can’t be controlled. Love can’t obey unjust laws. Love will always oppose tyrants.”
you’re dumber than a stump.” A horse whinnied close by.
“I’m afraid I won’t be able to put her back together.”
“You can’t put her back together. Only she can do that.”
“Love is patient, Gideon.”
“You are the kindest, cleverest, bravest girl I’ve ever met.”
“These scars are only further proof of that.”
“Because I was stupid enough to fall in love with a witch hunter. Stupid enough to hope he might love me back. And if he did, I wasn’t going to let anything come between us again.”
I don’t deserve this girl.
But I want to. I want to be the man who deserves Rune Winters.
“Home is where you’re safe. This island hasn’t been safe for a long time.”
“She’ll kill us both.” Gideon stared at her. “Then it will be an honor to die at your side.”
“Rune. Being married to you would be the honor of my life. You’re saying you’ll stay and fight, if I marry you?”
“Sometimes our paths must diverge from those we love,”
“But if love is the highest power, our paths will converge again—if not in this world, then the next.”
Even in death, my love, you are a wonder.
