Sigurd assumed that the world where he grew up was long gone. But when he returned to Germany in the early 1990s, his hometown had undergone an extensive program that can best be described as a combination of traffic calming and living streets, or woonerfs. The idea is to design streets that force drivers to adjust their behaviors, specifically in terms of speed, and give other road users priority over cars.
