It was as if my life had been marked by her absence as much as this moment was marked by her presence.
And I hated her, most of all, for forcing me to stay at this party. Because there was no way I could ever let her out of my sight.
I narrowed my eyes, determined to scare her away. She had no business being here. I glared until blood pooled in her cheeks, locking my legs to keep myself from moving toward her. She turned away to reach for something behind her and exposed her slender, bare neck in the process. My body interpreted the movement as an invitation—an invitation I was already moving to accept. Whoever she was, it was too late for her now.
She didn’t move. That only left me with one choice. I swept her off her feet, threw her over my shoulder, and carried her away before she could even blink.
It took every ounce of self-control I possessed not to pin her to the car and take her up on her offer. She wouldn’t resist, not once I was inside her. The only trouble was that I couldn’t decide what I wanted more: to sink my teeth into her or bury my dick inside her.
“That could be a problem,” I murmured, enjoying the way her shoulders tensed, “because Thea is my girlfriend.”
“Before you enjoy your evening, I’m afraid we have a pretender in our midst. Please give us a moment to remove our uninvited guest.” And then all eyes fell on me.
“I won’t have my first taste of you like this,” I whispered against her skin. “I need to take my time. I need to be alone with you where I can worship your body as it deserves to be worshipped. You’ve been patient, Thea. Not much longer, and I will give you exactly what you deserve.”
“Rousseaux should know better than to leave his belongings lying about, especially when he’s been feeding them.”
“Do you have any particular attachment to these?” he asked as he fiddled with my panties. My mouth went dry at the implication in his words, but I managed to shake my head. He bent his head, blocking my view, and then I heard the sharp snap of rending fabric. Cool air rushed against the warm wetness between my legs, and I swallowed a gasp as I felt the ruined lace flutter against my thigh. He’d ripped my panties off me—with his teeth. Thank God I couldn’t have his babies, because I was pretty sure my ovaries had just exploded.
“This should be good,” I grumbled. “What am I missing?” “What is above us in the food chain?” “Nothing.” She shook her head. Her voice teetered on the edge of a whisper, yet her words filled the room as she quoted, “I saw pale kings and princes, too. Pale warriors, death-pale were they all… I saw their pale lips in the gloam with horrid warning gapèd wide.”
“Her blood sings you the canticum ad infinitum. You know what the trouble is? It’s not that you’re screwing a pretty little human. She’s something more than human.”
“You are exactly the person I want by my side. You deserve the world. Let me give it to you.”
“Julian,” she interrupted, grabbing my shoulders and looking me directly in the eye, “you’re mating.”
“They won’t stare because of whom you belong to,” I whispered into her ear. “But because of how you belong to me.” “How is that?” she asked softly. “Completely.” I kissed the spot below her ear, earning a shiver. “Absolutely. Unequivocally.”
I opened my eyes and stared into the black pools of his eyes. “I’m your mate, Julian. I am yours. All of me. My body. My blood. You can have both. You can have everything.”
