It was one of the reasons I trusted her. She didn’t bother to hide her past or who she was now. She owned it.
I, Julian Rousseaux, had to take a wife.
It was as if my life had been marked by her absence as much as this moment was marked by her presence.
And I hated her, most of all, for forcing me to stay at this party. Because there was no way I could ever let her out of my sight.
She didn’t move. That only left me with one choice. I swept her off her feet, threw her over my shoulder, and carried her away before she could even blink.

“That could be a problem,” I murmured, enjoying the way her shoulders tensed, “because Thea is my girlfriend.”
“I can offer you the world.”
“Before you enjoy your evening, I’m afraid we have a pretender in our midst. Please give us a moment to remove our uninvited guest.” And then all eyes fell on me.
“Rousseaux should know better than to leave his belongings lying about, especially when he’s been feeding them.”
Thank God I couldn’t have his babies, because I was pretty sure my ovaries had just exploded.
Crap on a cracker.
“You are exactly the person I want by my side. You deserve the world. Let me give it to you.”
“Julian,” she interrupted, grabbing my shoulders and looking me directly in the eye, “you’re mating.”
The families we find are the families we keep.”
“They won’t stare because of whom you belong to,” I whispered into her ear. “But because of how you belong to me.” “How is that?” she asked softly. “Completely.” I kissed the spot below her ear, earning a shiver. “Absolutely. Unequivocally.”
She walked with death. She knew desire. She craved the forbidden.
