To everyone who struggles with self-doubt. You deserve all the happiness and success you dream of. Don’t let anyone convince you otherwise—not even yourself.
Is it possible to be attracted to someone’s brain? To the way they articulate their thoughts, string them together, and create new, eye-opening concepts?
“Talking to you is never a waste of time, Lila.”
But I would be lying if I said her praise didn’t light something in me. Something new and not entirely uncomfortable.
“Here. Type in my number on your phone.” She worries her lip between her teeth. “Are you sure that’s a good idea?” But she’s still reaching for her phone. “For emergencies,” I lie to myself. Lie to her. She nods, something electric and unfamiliar passing between us. “For emergencies,” she agrees. Her words sound like a lie,
Reed wraps an arm around my shoulders, bringing me closer against his side. My heart stops when I feel the warmth of his lips on the top of my head, gentle and fleeting.
Having her in my arms is worth every risk.
“Who keeps you calm, Reed?” You, angel. You keep me calm.
Because I’m falling for her. For her mind, her heart, her laugh, her touch—all of her. And it will only end in heartbreak.
Instead, I hold out my hand. “Can I?” She frowns, confused. “You want to brush my hair?” My fingers graze hers as I grab her brush. “I’ll settle for brushing your hair.”
Creating beautiful things suits you.
Lila: Question. Reed: Shoot. Lila: Do you miss me? Reed: All the time.
“Lila,” he starts, his voice so raw with emotion that it makes me breathless. “I think I knew the moment I met you that we had something special. My future had always been dark to me, unclear—I never saw happiness in it. But then you showed me love, real love, and everything started taking shape. I imagined things I never allowed myself to, like having kids and growing old with someone. You are my life, my angel, and I want to spend the rest of my days with you. “I love you, Lila. More than I’ve ever loved anything and anyone in this world. Will you marry me?”
And I realize there’s nothing, absolutely anything, I would’ve done differently. Because every painful lesson got me here, to this life that feels so complete. To the brightest light.
