Today, I’m tired of feeding my inner demons. Today, I choose to let the light win.
Whatever allows me to see that pretty blush on her cheeks, I’ll take it.
I can stay. I can stay for an hour or two or three or for as long as you need me to. Because suddenly, the thought of you not getting home safely is choking the air out of my lungs.
She’s such a beautiful sight, clad in my leather jacket.
“Let it all out,” I mumble against the top of her head. “I’ve got you, angel. I’m here.”
And as I look down at her, I wonder what I’ve done to deserve her in my life.
You make everything better just by being you.”
I don’t get the chance to stand from my chair before her body crashes into mine, her arms wrapping around my neck in a sealing hug that allows me to really breathe for the first time in my goddamn life.
“How do you always have the right words to keep me calm?” Her fingers graze my neck. “Who keeps you calm, Reed?” You, angel. You keep me calm.
“You once asked what keeps me calm,” I rasp out, my fingers itching to move closer to her waist. “I called you because it’s you, angel. You keep me calm.”
As I watch her, I wish I’d be brave enough to tell her how mesmerizing her every move is. How being around her has become my favorite thing. How we could watch paint dry together, and I wouldn’t get bored.
You want to do this? Then let’s fucking do this. Tell me what you need, angel, and it’s yours.”
“No one else gets to touch you like this anymore,” I grunt. “No one but me. Understood?” She nods, breathless. “Only you, Reed.” “That’s my girl.”
“You’re the most perfect woman I’ve ever met, inside and out.” I cradle her face in my hand and press my lips to her forehead. “Nothing and no one could ever make me regret you, Lila.”
“You shine brighter than anyone else I’ve ever met. All your hard work has gotten you this opportunity—enjoy it, angel. Have fun on that stage because you’ve earned every second of it.”
“You’re the best thing that has ever happened to me, Lila. You deserve all the good things that happen to you because you’ve worked so damn hard for them. But that doesn’t change the fact that I will never forgive myself for hurting you.”
“Are we friends, Reed?” “I’ll be whatever you want me to be as long as I get to stay in your life, angel.”
