“I’ll stay to give you time to process that you’re leaving this house, with me. And for the record, Kenni, I know exactly what you want and need…” Carter glanced over his shoulder. “Because you’re mine.”
“You are my standard, Kenni. I’ll take you, however and wherever I can have you. I don’t give a fuck about any of this. It’s just things.”
“Are you nervous, Kenni?” “No, are you?” “No, I’m complete.”
“Not if you think you’re going to climb in and out of my bed when you find time to remember I exist.” He smirked and gripped the back of her neck. “I’m well aware you exist. Not something I can fucking forget.”
I’m in love with a killer and not making any excuses for it.
“Your life was complicated when you barged into my house, Carter. I missed you when I didn’t have to. Brooks knew…” “I didn’t know, Kenni. Doesn’t fucking matter what he knew.” “You wouldn’t let him tell you. Some twisted honor system that makes no sense. I don’t know what that’s all about but you could have been there with me. I didn’t have to miss you.”
But if you decide you don’t want to try, you won’t get another chance, Carter.”
“You’re mine, Kenni, why wouldn’t I be?” The room fell quiet until he spoke again. “Why did you give him another chance?” Tevin. I was lonely and thought he could help me forget. He didn’t. “There’s only one you. If I couldn’t have you then I had to figure out how to be happy without you. It didn’t matter who the person was because it wasn’t who I wanted. I tried, it didn’t work.” “You wanted to be happy with him?” “No, I wanted to be happy…” With you…
“I was coming back, Kenni. I just needed time to make sure my life didn’t touch yours. Not like this.”
His thumb gently moved over her bottom lip when Carter really wanted to kiss her. Now wasn’t the time. He had no intentions of McKenna being forced back into his life. The goal was to show up when he no longer had the distractions and threats of his past.
I don’t know how the fuck I’m gonna make this work with you wanting to run and never look back, but you’re stuck with me, Kenni. No fucking outs.
“Are you still mine, Kenni?” “You can’t feel how much I belong to you?”
the heart. “What’s this about?” “I like butterflies.” He sensed the vagueness in her answer. “A lot of people do, but they don’t have them tattooed on their bodies. What’s this one about? It’s new…” You got it after I left. “You.” Her eyes met his. “A black butterfly symbolizes death.” His questioning eyes locked with hers. “To some…” “What does it symbolize for you then, Kenni?” He watched her with an intensity that tightened in her chest while his tongue slowly traced the image of the small tattoo. She moaned her approval before confirming, “Butterflies symbolize rebirth, growth, beauty in

“Navigating my life after you took your darkness away.” His gaze reflected remorse and she added, “But black also represents power, strength, and it’s sexy…” She smiled lazily at Carter. “And that’s you.”
“It will only ever be me.”
“My exact fucking point. Men take care of home. You are my home, McKenna. Whether we’re together or not, you will always be good.”
“My magic hands are used to handle quality control. Quality of the people who are allowed to breathe the same air as us, Kenni. When someone proves they’re no longer deserving, then I dispose of the waste. Those people I’m hired to make disappear are waste. You call it playing God. I consider it balance. Nothing exists without balance.”
“Why?” “The way you looked at her when we walked in. There was recognition and shouldn’t have been. How much did he pay you for information on her?” Lynx continued gasping for air as his eyes darted over to McKenna then back to Carter who stared, head angled to the side in arrogance. “He…I…no…” “No point in lying. Doesn’t fucking matter because whatever he gave wasn’t enough. She’s mine, which means she’s priceless. You fucked up.”
“He gave someone information that was meant to be used as a way to harm you, Kenni. He won’t get a second chance to do so. I’ll always choose you. No matter what…” I killed him for you.
“Is anyone going to die?” Carter chuckled and shrugged noncommittally. “I would hope not, but that’s always a possibility.” He winked and she frowned hard, electing to keep her thoughts to herself.
I killed him. For you. I chose you, again.
“Life is about choices, Kenni. Sometimes the choices you make carry consequences you don’t like but you have to make one, regardless. When you do, you can’t consider all the things you lost. The consequences are the consequences.”
“I’ll always choose you.”
“I do very bad things to you, when I’m fucking you the way you like, and you’re not bad. So yeah, mostly.”
“You’re my life support, Kenni. I need you.”
“Too many to discuss but the most important one is because he can’t see life without me and he doesn’t want a life without me.” “Then after we finish what we’re doing, you should call your mother back.” “Why?” He smirked and thrusted upward. McKenna’s teeth grazed her lip while her lids fluttered. “Lifeline, Kenni. You’re mine.” I can’t fucking live without you and I don’t want to.
“There’s no running from you, Carter. I wouldn’t waste my time trying.”
“Nah…” He hooked her waist and pulled her to him. “I’m never gonna force anything with you, Kenni. If you want to leave, you can…” Her brows pinched and he added, “But I’m going with you, so home is going to be wherever we go.”
words. “I want a daughter. And a son, with you.”
“I didn’t want this.” To want someone. To need someone. To be wanted and needed. “I know.” “But now, I don’t know how to not want this.” I fucking want you and need you. “I know,” she said quietly then followed with, “Me too.”
“She’s going to have questions. Other people will too. You’ll never be able to be completely honest. There will always be a lie attached to us.” His gaze narrowed with an intense stare. “Attached to us but not between us. As long as we keep it that way then I’m fine. What person on this earth doesn’t have secrets? We are who we are. You’re mine, I’m yours.”
“I’ll give you whatever you want. Anything, just name it.” “You don’t have anything I want.” “I have money. I’ll give you…” Carter sighed, lifted his gun, and aimed it at Jace. “I don’t want your money, Jace. I want you to pull the fucking trigger so that I can go home and fuck my wife.” Wife, she wasn’t my wife yet but she would be soon.
She’s gonna be my fucking wife.
He yanked her into his chest and draped his arm around her waist, nuzzling his face in the curve of her neck. She shifted and sighed in contentment. “I missed you.” “I missed you too.” He kissed her shoulder and guided her closer. A few minutes passed and Carter felt her breathing level again so he reached for her left hand, slid the diamond on her finger, and softly pressed a kiss to her knuckle before his eyes closed and his breathing fell in sync with hers. No more walking away, for either of us.
“Marry me, Kenni.” “I thought you weren’t going to ask.” “Was that a question?” The vibration of his voice danced against her back. A soft smile eased onto McKenna’s face and she shook her head. “No, it wasn’t.” “But I’ll ask if you need me to. I’ll do any-fucking-thing you need me to, Kenni.” She turned against him and fisted his shirt at the sides. “Same.” “Then say yes.”
know you’re capable but that doesn’t mean you can’t depend on me. I may not have magic hands but I have logic when you’re irrational. I have calmness when you’re a raging storm. I’m the light to your dark. Protecting someone isn’t always physical, Carter. I can’t shoot a gun but I can cover your emotional wellbeing.”
“My heart is outside my chest, Kenni,”
“You better because this is all you get from now on. It’s me and you, Kenni, and we’re gonna ride this shit until the wheels fall off. When they do, I’m buying another set so we can do it all over again.”
