All it cost me was a broken heart. Ironic, considering I’d gone to Faerie to mend his.
“Lunasworn.” When she says it aloud, I feel a small pull at the center of my being, urging me to answer. “It means ‘Sword of the Moon’. It is an old name. Powerful.”
Shield of the Sun. That was what he’d said his name meant. And me: sword of the Moon.
“He went looking for you every day you were gone. He’s barely been here, Eleanor.”
It seems parents might be Ruskin’s big weakness.
“Everything’s more boring when you’re not around.” Destan sighs, flopping down into a chair besides mine.
“When poison runs in the vein of the Seelie Kingdom, the magic of the realm will bring the hand of metal to purge it.”

“Supposedly, the bond isn’t ‘active’ until they share their true names, but after that, the legends say they can do amazing things.”
“I smelled blood, Eleanor’s blood, and knew someone had been foolish enough to spill it in my court.”
“It’s different, Ella, because even if I cannot have you, I cannot have a world without you in it.”
“But I am not your court. So just know that with me, that attitude doesn’t work. With me, it will cost you.”
“And she’s not a pet. I assure you, Eleanor is far from tame.”
“Naminai, Ella. It’s fate. We’re meant to be together, which means nothing else matters. We can trust each other now. There’s no need for any more obstacles between us.”
“I don’t think it counts as trust if you always need excuses and proof before entertaining the idea that I might not be a monster.”
I look at the stick, bewildered. “And this is for…?” “To reach high places,” he says. “I need my cup back.”
Fated. That’s what the deal had made us—the girl who existed because of fae magic, and the prince who couldn’t survive without her love.
