Hayden turns to ice, hard and unmoving against me. Yet he doesn’t stop me from exploring him.
CALISTA HAS AWAKENED SOMETHING IN ME. Something I thought dead and buried.
I concentrate on Calista’s face when another tries to take its place. That of another woman.
The only one I’ve ever loved.
The gentle caress along my jaw, accompanied by my name being spoken, pulls me from the dark recesses of my mind.
I look down at Calista as if seeing her for the first time. In return, she smiles up at me. To reassure me. To comfort me.
It takes me back to that day at the funeral where Calista consoled everyone else instead of receiving support like she should’ve.
I’ll never confuse the feel of Calista’s touch with another’s. Each stroke of her fingers brands me, the heat of her skin on mine is a fire that burns deeper and hotter than a supernova.

Can I have it with Hayden?
“Are you all right?” I ask.
“I used to help her through them as best I could,” he says. “But there’s only so much you can do when a person’s under the influence of drugs.”
He closes his eyes, leaning into my touch. “No one should have to suffer through that alone.”
“I’m still grieving and angry about his death. I’m not perfect.”
“You can trust me to find the person responsible and make them pay.” His gaze bores into mine. “Just tell me the name of the hospital.”
No matter how much I go over the event in his office, I can’t make sense of it all. The only thing I know for certain is that I saw a side of him that I didn’t know existed.
His reassurance might’ve been firm, but he was gentle. Tender in a way that I would’ve never imagined him capable of. Now that I’ve experienced it, I want more. Why?
I hate how my body obeys him before my mind has had a chance to think it over.
So here I am, wearing something that makes me feel both sexy and exposed.
It’s similar to the way I feel whenever I’m around Hayden.
“The gentleman over there,” she says, pointing to the man we were just discussing, “wants to buy you ladies a drink.”
“I’m good.” The waitress slides her gaze to Harper. “And you?”
“Fine, but we’re not leaving without his number. Okay?”
