Family isn’t defined by a number of people or the social construct. It’s defined by the number of heartbeats, shared laughs, and a love that goes beyond borders or restrictions.
“I will always chase you.”
“Stop looking at me like that.” I flick my gaze to his. “What?”
“Stop looking at me like you want my hands on your body.” He inhales as if to keep a hold on himself, his knuckles turning white as he grips the steering wheel. “If I touch you, I won’t ever stop.”
“Fear is healthy. It keeps you from hurting yourself.” He pauses, his gaze far away, distant. “But it doesn’t stop you from getting hurt by
others.”
“I agree, Callie.” I sneak a glance at him. “No one’s ever called me that.” “And no one else ever will.” I ignore the way my heart stutters in my chest and the way my breathing goes shallow.
She is mine. My reason for feeling alive. My reason for feeling enraged. My reason for feeling anything at all.
“She is a person of great interest to me and should be shown the ultimate respect at all times. Whenever she requests to speak to me, you will contact me immediately and put all of my other plans on hold. There’s nothing and no one more important than her. Understood?”
“Because you’re in my blood, Callie. Underneath my skin. No matter how hard I try, I can’t cut you out without killing myself in the process.”
“It’s never been this way for me. I don’t know how to deal with it except to make sure that you’re safe and cared for at all times. That’s the only thing keeping me from going completely insane and kidnapping you. Although I’ve thought about it. A lot.”
“It might not be healthy or what’s considered normal.”
“But I don’t want normal if it means I can’t have you.”
“Do you hear me, Callie? I’ll never leave you. Not in this life or whatever comes after. You are mine. And I will burn this world to fucking ashes before I let anything take you from me. Or me from you.”
“I’ll fuse your broken pieces with mine. Together, we’ll be whole, Callie.”
“I will always come back to you, Callie.”
can’t let you go now that you’re here. If I did, it’d be like removing my lungs. I wouldn’t fucking survive it.”
“You don’t have to. I know it to be true. You’re looking for security in material things, so ask for what you want. Money, done. Abstinence, done. Only for a time anyway. A marriage certificate where you’d be my wife and therefore entitled to all my assets? Done. I’d marry you tonight if that’s what you wanted. Whatever it takes to get you to finally understand that you’re everything to me.”
All I want is you.
