I look at him. He turns off the truck and darkness wraps around him like an old lover. Shadows dance across the tense expression on his face.
If even the cops can’t help me, then…I guess I’m marrying him.
“If your life was such a mess, you should’ve known better than to drag someone else into it. You knew everyone around you could get hurt if your past caught up with you. You knew that, didn’t you? You just didn’t care.”
She’s a walking, breathing reminder of how fucking badly I failed.
Does she like it? I want her to like it. I want her to like just one thing about Nero De Luca, even if it’s something as inconsequential as his home.
“I not only forced Blake to marry me, I also set her house on fire so that she’d move in with me.” Rafe makes a surprised huff. “I didn’t realize this was a competition, but all right, you win.”
Since when do you want a simple life? What happened to your thirst for adventure, passion, romance? It disappeared once I realized living the plot of a romantic thriller is a lot more difficult than simply reading it.
“You can hate me. You can wish me dead. But you will never threaten to hurt yourself again. If you do anything to put yourself in harm’s way, I swear to God, Blake, I will build a cage and lock you in it.”
You can take breaks, you know? Wouldn’t want your wife to yell at me again about the working conditions.”
“Back when I only had myself to worry about, sure. But with you here, everything is different.”
I file that tip away in my mental folder—the one where I’ll keep all the compromises I’ll make, all the sins I’ll commit.
I long for the days when I could just walk over and embrace her. She’d probably stab me if I tried to do that now.
The more I try to untangle my feelings for Nero, the less I like what I find.
There’s nothing but him and me, and we’re swept up in a tornado of lust and bad decisions.
I’m a girl who grew up in a trailer park, but I’m wearing a dress worthy of a princess.
“Moving from Missouri to New York is quite the fairytale. Has it been everything you expected it to be?” A fairytale. Yeah, maybe one of those dark ones where the children get lured into the witch's hut with sweets. The kind where dreams twist into nightmares, and the prince is as likely to be the villain as he is the hero.
“It never fails to amaze me how casually you talk about murder.” “It’s just a part of life, like paying taxes or being stuck in traffic.”
“I fucking love you.”
The kiss is an explosion. A supernova. The energy released pours into my veins and takes up residence, setting my body aflame.
Rowan Miller. Nero De Luca. Turns out they’re not so different after all, at least not as far as my heart is concerned.
I should have known that “read” is the magic word. Her eyes light up. “That sounds nice.”
Can I read some to you?”
But seeing you fighting for your life made me realize I love you more than my own selfish desire to keep you with me.
And there’s something beautiful in being that one person this powerful, terrifying man can just drop the mask and be himself with.”
Why did you let her go?” I extract my elbow from his grip. “Because it was the right thing to do. There’s nothing more lethal than a woman who makes you want to do the right thing, is there?”
“Pinch me, will you? I need to know this isn’t an illusion. Men like me don’t get everything they could possibly want, do they?”
