Men who know they’re about to die often pray for peace, but I know there’s no prayer that will give me solace. Only this woman might.
“I not only forced Blake to marry me, I also set her house on fire so that she’d move in with me.” Rafe makes a surprised huff. “I didn’t realize this was a competition, but all right, you win.”
Since when do you want a simple life? What happened to your thirst for adventure, passion, romance? It disappeared once I realized living the plot of a romantic thriller is a lot more difficult than simply reading
“You can be mad at me,” he says in a low voice. “You can hate me. You can wish me dead. But you will never threaten to hurt yourself again. If you do anything to put yourself in harm’s way, I swear to God, Blake, I will build a cage and lock you in it.”
Alessio takes another loud bite. “I won’t hurt her. I like her.” I narrow my eyes at him. “Why?” “She wasn’t scared of me. Most girls are scared of me.”
That’s because she’s got no idea how fucking cuckoo you are.
“Let me call Blake.” Alessio pops the apple core into his mouth. What is he, a fucking horse? “Go ahead. You can take breaks, you know? Wouldn’t want your wife to yell at me again about the working conditions.”
“Why don’t we practice together?” “What would be the point?” “I’ll talk you through it. Tell you just how pretty you look with your fingers stuffed inside your dripping pussy.”
“I can’t stop looking at you.” “Is there something on my face?” “Definitely. Eyes I could spend the rest of my life gazing into. Lips I’d really like to kiss. And a mouth I’d love to taste and fu—”
She glares at me. “Nero.” “What?” “Why are you touching me?” “Because I’m obsessed with you, baby. Haven’t you realized that by now?”
“When are you going to understand that other women don’t exist for me anymore? There’s only you. There will only ever be you.”
“But, Sunshine, the more I see you fight the feelings that are trying to burst out of you, the more determined I become. I will wait for you for however long it takes. I’d rather face your scornful looks and your righteous anger than exist in a world where you’re not mine.”
“Believe me, I know. But I also know that as long as my heart beats, I’m going to keep trying to find a path back to you. Back to us.”
I press my forehead to hers. “You’re it for me. You are my first love. And you are my last.”
I whip around to see Alessio charging into the living room, a machine gun in hand. My eyes widen. I like his style. “I’m fine!”
Don’t go. Please don’t go. Choose me. I know I’m not perfect, but I will spend the rest of my days loving you better than anyone else ever can. I’ll make all of the darkness that comes with me worth it. I promise.
Maybe that’s the problem with never having loved anyone before her—I made love into something mythical, something that can conquer all. But maybe love is simpler than that. Maybe it’s just doing the right thing for the other person, even if it tears you apart.
“Alessio Ferraro is here for you, sir.” “Tell him to fuck right off,” I growl. “Sir, please! I’m afraid I can’t say that.” “Why not?” “He’s not taking no for an answer.”
“What’s the point of having security here? Where are they?” “They're here. Cowering.”
