my husband
We live together. He’s my fricking husband. A husband who wants to repair our relationship. A husband who’s shown me he’s willing to die for me.
my wife. My. Fucking. Wife.
“That’s old history.” “Sunshine, history tends to repeat itself.”
Fuck it. I’ve got nothing to lose. “I’m worried I’m putting you in danger. I promised you I’d keep you safe, and this doesn’t fucking feel like me fulfilling that promise. This feels like me doing the wrong thing for selfish reasons again.”
“I can handle this. I don’t want to see you hurt, Nero.” “It’s not your job to fix my problems, Sunshine.”
My gaze drills into the cards on the table while a fantasy of putting a bullet right between Maksim’s eyes plays on repeat inside my head.
“I don’t believe in fate, but I believe in my husband.

By now, I know Nero would never cheat on me. He was willing to die for me.
“When are you going to understand that other women don’t exist for me anymore? There’s only you. There will only ever be you.”
“I dream of you every night, Sunshine. Of having you writhe beneath me again. I dream of your moans and the way you used to gasp my name when I buried myself deep inside of you. I dream of nipping on your perfect lips with my teeth and then kissing them better. And I dream of that moment when we’d both reach our peak and it felt like we were the only people left in this entire wretched world.”
“I’ve hurt you, so let me make it better. Let me give you pleasure to make up for the pain.”
“You belong in my bed, beautiful wife,” he murmurs. “But since you won’t come to me there, I will make you come for me right here.”

Nero and I exchange a look, but strangely enough, I’m not nervous. It takes me a second to realize that it’s because…I’m with him.
He gives me a smirk. “No, Sunshine. Believe it or not, exhibitionism isn’t really my thing.”
Nero grabs the whiskey and leans against the bar. “It’s better this way. If you were wearing any less, I’d have to kill any man that looked at you, and it would turn into a whole mess.” He takes a sip of his drink. I give him a weary look. “It never fails to amaze me how casually you talk about murder.” “It’s just a part

I used to love it when Nero held me by the throat like that…
He pulls back to look at me. “I have no clue, but have I told you that you look really fucking pretty when you turn all pink like this?”
A moan catches inside my throat. “Is being here turning you on?” “Watching you get all flustered is. You’re so worked up that you’re grinding against me.”
“What the fuck did you say to my wife?”
What I fear is the fact that I no longer understand my wife.
If only you knew how fucking crazy Rafe is about Cleo, or the kind of relationships her sisters have with their men, you would realize that there are plenty of us who find Maksim disgusting for how he treats his wife.
“Baby—”
You’re so fucking brave, baby. And so damn good for trying to help a bastard like me.”
“But you don’t need to be brave for my sake, Sunshine.
“It was always only about you. What I want is you. If I had you… Fuck, I’d be happy doing anything Ferraro wanted me to.”
I press my lips to her ear and whisper, “I’m in love with you. And I know you’re not sure if you feel the same way about me because I’m not the kind of man you ever imagined yourself with.”
“But, Sunshine, the more I see you fight the feelings that are trying to burst out of you, the more determined I become. I will wait for you for however long it takes. I’d rather face your scornful looks and your righteous anger than exist in a world where you’re not mine.”
“It’s never going to be like it was. Not here.” “Believe me, I know. But I also know that as long as my heart beats, I’m going to keep trying to find a path back to you. Back to us.”
“Open your eyes,” he commands. “No more hiding from me. I won’t let you go somewhere else inside your head.”
