Rowan Miller was a lie. And this man? A liar.
“I hate you. I hope I never see you again, Nero.” The cracks spread, break, shatter. Can death feel any worse than this? I doubt it.
“I not only forced Blake to marry me, I also set her house on fire so that she’d move in with me.” Rafe makes a surprised huff. “I didn’t realize this was a competition, but all right, you win.”
“You can be mad at me,” he says in a low voice. “You can hate me. You can wish me dead. But you will never threaten to hurt yourself again. If you do anything to put yourself in harm’s way, I swear to God, Blake, I will build a cage and lock you in it.”
What is this? The mob version of The Devil Wears Prada? Alessio Ferraro is a fucking diva. The coffee shop he sends me to is on the other side of town.
But she stayed and took care of me. And then she scolded Alessio Fucking Ferraro like he’s a kid in middle school instead of the biggest psychopath in New York City.
“I won’t hurt her. I like her.” I narrow my eyes at him. “Why?” “She wasn’t scared of me. Most girls are scared of me.” That’s because she’s got no idea how fucking cuckoo you are.
Alessio pops the apple core into his mouth. What is he, a fucking horse? “Go ahead. You can take breaks, you know? Wouldn’t want your wife to yell at me again about the working conditions.”
“Why are you touching me?” “Because I’m obsessed with you, baby. Haven’t you realized that by now?”
“I was prepared to love the world, but no one understood me, so I learned to hate.”
I have to pretend I don’t have any morals. The longer I stay in this world, the less I recognize myself. And that’s why I need to get out.
“When are you going to understand that other women don’t exist for me anymore? There’s only you. There will only ever be you.”
“Please, there’s no way you pay taxes.” “What do you mean? I pay some.” “Oh yeah? What do you put down as your job?” He smirks. “Waste management.” “There’s something seriously wrong with you,”
“But, Sunshine, the more I see you fight the feelings that are trying to burst out of you, the more determined I become. I will wait for you for however long it takes. I’d rather face your scornful looks and your righteous anger than exist in a world where you’re not mine.”
“Believe me, I know. But I also know that as long as my heart beats, I’m going to keep trying to find a path back to you. Back to us.” Her shining eyes pierce through me as she sobs. I press my forehead to hers. “You’re it for me. You are my first love. And you are my last.”
He’s lightning to my thunder. Gasoline to my flame.
But maybe love is simpler than that. Maybe it’s just doing the right thing for the other person, even if it tears you apart.
But what I realized is that it’s not about shutting out the darkness completely. It’s about finding a way to shine your light, even when the darkness is all around you.”
“There’s darkness in all of us. You don’t have to embrace it, but you do have to accept that it’s part of you. It doesn’t define you. It’s just one piece of the puzzle.”
“This is why I don’t have friends. People are too complicated.” “You seem to know how to crack ‘em well.” “They’re only simple when their life is at stake. Everyone just wants to survive.” “Not me.” “Hence the confusion,” he mutters.
“That’s true, there’s nothing simple about you. Trying to fit you into a box would be like trying to contain all the beauty of the universe inside a single glass jar.”
“I do. I see all of you—the light and the dark—and I love both.”
“When you left, you took a piece of me with you,” I whisper. “The most vital one.” “I know. And now I’m here to give it back.”
“Wherever you go, I go, Sunshine. Always.”
