Since the Muslim school only went to grade seven, all the boys were excited about starting high school, but the girls were terrified of what would become of them. The summer before high school was notoriously the time when girls disappeared. It was the perfect time to send them back home unnoticed. In the extreme cases, it was a popular time for so- called honour killings to take place. They are usually perpetrated in response to a girl being “too westernized.”
