“This stipulation…is unique, I’ll say that much. Your father is requiring you to reside on Lucky Ranch for one full calendar year before you can access any of the funds in the trust. He also requests you actively participate in the day-to-day operations as principal of Lucky Ranch Enterprises, Incorporated. If you do so, you’ll receive a generous monthly stipend from the trust for every month you reside in Hartsville.”
Lifting my hat off my head, I smooth back my hair. It’s already damp with sweat again. If this heat doesn’t kill me, Mollie Luck surely will.
Cash trots over, his shirt plastered to his chest and stomach. “Take a break if you need one. Drink lots of water. More’n you think you need.” “Who made you boss?” I say with a smirk. “Your daddy did. You best listen.” I wag my eyebrows. “Yessir.” Wyatt eyes us. “Is this some kinda weird foreplay y’all got going on?” “Nah.” I sip water from the thermos Cash dropped into my saddlebag earlier. Bless him, he put ice in it. “Just your brother pretending to be in charge.”
His eyes return to mine. “I respect your timing, Mollie. I’d never push you to do something you weren’t ready for. But if we did make a baby?” His Adam’s apple bobs. “Honey, I’d marry the shit out of you. Not because it’s the right thing to do, but because I’m in love with you.” I blink, my eyes bulging. Maybe that’s why they fill with tears all over again so quickly. The timing couldn’t be worse.
“You’re up-to-date on your Bellamy Brooks, I see.” Wheeler turns back to Cash. “If we made men’s boots, you’d be first on the list to model them.” “Would I have to take off my shirt?” “Yes.” “Count me in.” He grabs my leg when I try to sit in the chair next to his. Without another word, he guides me onto his lap and puts his hand on my thigh. “Y’all have some real talent. The boots you make are beautiful.”
