The delight that lit Ayana’s face made me wish I was the type of man who laughed easily, if only so I could see her smile more often.
Dante opened his mouth, but Kai cut him off. “Don’t listen to Russo. He doesn’t know how to let go of a grudge,” he said. “My advice is to listen, be patient, and never, ever rearrange your wife’s books without permission.” Kai frowned. “You would think alphabetical order by title makes sense, but apparently, it’s not ‘aesthetically pleasing.’” “Why would you rearrange her books?” Xavier looked appalled. “That’s rule number one of being in a relationship, married or not. Don’t touch their shit. If I tried to reorganize Sloane’s stuff, I wouldn’t be here right now. I’d be dead.”
If I could choose anyone to be with at that moment, I would choose him.
“Kada te konačno budem poljubio, nećeš više nositi njegov prsten na ruci.”
“Nisam sklon kompromisima, srce, ali za tebe bih pristao i na hiljadu njih.”
“Okay, Markovic, pay up,” I said. “What did you say?” “I’m not usually a compromise person, srce, but for you, I’d agree to a thousand compromises if you asked.”
“And yet, you won’t translate srce,” I breathed, trying to restore some semblance of control to my emotions. “You know what it means,” Vuk said, his voice tender again. I did. I’d finally looked it up, but even if I hadn’t, I heard the sentiment every time he uttered it. Srce moje. My heart.
“I love you,” she said. “Not because you saved my life but because you’re you.”
There was only one sentence printed in vintage typewriter font: Will you marry me?
“When I first told you about this workshop, you asked why it was so late at night,” he said. A wash of pink colored his cheekbones, and there was a small shake in his normally cool, steady voice. “It’s because I wanted to do this under the Northern Lights. Last year, when we were in D.C., you told me you never got to see the Lights, and I wanted you to experience them. I want you to experience everything beautiful in this world, Ayana, and I hope you’ll give me the honor of being by your side for it all.”
