“Is this your master plan? Convince the town and everyone we’re dating by bringing me coffee in the mornings?” He grins, his eyes twinkling with mischief. “It’d be easier if you were in my bed, but I can work with this.”
Coraline Carter is going to ruin me. It’ll be the most exquisite ruination, and I’ll welcome it with open arms.
“It’s not fine. Someone put their hands on you, baby, and now they’re going to lose them, yeah?”
“Let me take care of you,” I practically beg. “I don’t know how,” she whispers, her eyes filling with tears.
“You’re safe with me,” I whisper, my voice thick with emotion. “I protect what’s mine, and you, Coraline Carter, are mine.”
“What do you want?” He turns me around in his arms, walking us back toward the platform. “Didn’t I tell you? I only play for keeps.” And then he kisses me.
“This isn’t real.” “I’m getting tired of hearing you say that, baby.” “Well, it’s true, so get used to it,” she bites out. “Does this feel fucking fake to you?”
“Just remember, they can watch. But no one can touch you but me. You’re mine, Coraline.”
“That’s my girl,”
A thought takes root, blooms too quickly for me to stop it. But I think I might love Coraline Carter for the rest of my life.
“Just reminding you that this thing between us? It’s real, baby. Don’t forget it.”
“I won’t forget,” I promise. And I mean it. “Drive safe,” he says, brushing his fingertips over my neck. “I’ll see you later?”
“Good. Let’s go remind these pricks why it’s a bad idea to touch what’s mine.”
“Reminding you who you belong to,”
“Listen to me, baby, because I think you’re having a hard time comprehending something. You’re mine. And I always protect what’s mine, yeah?”
"You're mine now. And I take care of what's mine."
I think I could wake up next to Coraline Carter for the rest of my life, and it wouldn’t be enough. I’d have to chase her ass down in the next life, and the one after that too.
“You’ve always been mine, Coraline Carter. I was just waiting for you to catch up.”
