There was the obvious explanation, of course: that as a man of meagre means from a rural town and with no family money, Aneurin simply could not afford the responsibility of taking a wife. Though it was clear from his dress and manner that his position at Malstrom’s afforded him a semblance of proper living, I was well aware that the need to provide for a wife and subsequent offspring could often be the thin line between relative comfort and dire poverty.
