“Don’t stand so close,” she breathes out. I bend my head farther just so I can take another hit of her. “Tell me what to do again.”
“In fact, I can’t see anything but you, and it’s fucking infuriating.”
He grips my chin between his forefinger and thumb, lifting my face until we lock eyes. My stomach flips. “I already told you,” he utters. “I see you. Even when you look away.”
“If I shouldn’t kill you…” He looks at me from the corner of his eye before staring back out at the water. “Then what should I do with you?” A warning siren blares in my head, screaming, Danger! Danger! Do not answer! I ignore it. “Whatever you want,” I reply.
“In a different life, I’d ask you to touch me.”
I’m fucking gone while I watch her. The world could light itself on fire behind us, and I don’t think I’d care.
“Say something.” He demands it this time. “Why?” I force out, my body so hot that I feel like I’m burning from the inside out. “Because if you don’t, I’ll kiss the fuck out of you.”
“In a different life”—I cut her off, pressing even closer until her neck cranes—“I’d kiss you.” My gaze locks on hers, my thumb still skimming back and forth against her lip. “I’d drag you inside, and I’d spend all night taking away the pain he caused.”
“In a different life”—I bend until my mouth is centimeters from hers—“I would do anything to make you mine, and I’d bring you any person who’s wronged you and make them beg for death at your feet. All you’d have to do is say the word.”
“Who the fuck are you?” “I’m the guy who’s about to kill you if you touch her again.” Enzo’s voice is low and lethal, and it’s inappropriate timing, but heat flares between my legs. “In fact, don’t even look at her.”
“I can take care of myself,” I say, the same way I always do. He reaches out to grip my chin, tilting my face up to meet his. “I know. But just because you can doesn’t mean you should have to.”
“Don’t touch me,” I plead. He’s silent for a moment, and then says, “I won’t.”
“I won’t,” he repeats. “But I want to, so fucking bad that it feels like I can’t breathe.” “Well, sometimes what we want doesn’t matter.” I try to make my voice sound stern, but I don’t think it works based on the way it wobbles as it hits the air. His face lowers until it’s next to my ear. “Sometimes…it feels like you’re the only thing that does.”
“In a different life…” I pause, emotion suddenly clogging my throat. “I’d love you out loud.”
“Let me make new memories with you every single day, piccola sirena. Do me the honor of allowing me to be your husband, and I’ll love you so goddamn loudly, everyone will hear.”
