“Lifetime. Anything less is unacceptable.” Xaden slides his hand to the back of my neck. “And
“Please, don’t wait on our account.” Faris waves at us. “Chocolate’s an uncommon treat this far from Deverelli.” And she’s been hoarding it for weeks. My mind begins to race.
Weeks. She knew we were coming. I prefer a Deverelli approach to an alliance. That’s what Queen Marlis said. Courtlyn must have informed the other isles. Talia knew Xaden was coming.
Something’s in the cake.
“I wish you the best of luck.” I manage to keep my voice level. “You have mediocre guards. I have ten lethally trained riders and fliers, four gryphons, and seven pissed-off dragons. The odds are in my favor.”
Air gushes from my lungs as Ridoc looks down. The cook’s knife is lodged in his side.
“Asshole!” Ridoc shouts, and I pivot to see him plow his fist into the cook’s face. “I have four uniforms, but only one fucking flight jacket, and I”—punch—“hate”—punch—“sewing!”

“Look at you from a distance!” Ridoc retreats, his arms still held high. When
“I can’t mend him.”
Hair as black as the day we married, but in place of the age lines I’d expected were bulging scarlet veins branching outward from her red-ringed eyes.”
“I choose you. I choose whatever risk this brings. I see every part of you, Xaden: The good. The bad. The unforgivable. That’s what you promised, and that’s what I want—all of you. I can handle myself, even against you if I have to.”
“Your inability to follow simple orders will get her killed, and I will not lose her as I did the one who came before!”
Asher returned today. Gods help us if anyone finds out. I’m not sure I’ll ever forgive him for what he’s done to her.
“You really want to yell at the massive unknown dragon?” Rhi whispers.
“Hate to break it to you, love, but three days was never going to help you in that subject.”
“You have been the gift of my life,”
