We all know why he’s staying in it, even if he won’t say it—to look out for Fallon. If she’s on the circuit, so is he.
“It’s sundress season,” Charlie mutters, his gaze glued to Ruby’s departing ass. Groaning, he scrapes a hand down his beard. “And my wife’s out to fucking kill me.”
“Your ancestors hunted mammoths with a spear, honey. You can walk past a rooster.”
Fallon McGraw’s guardian angel is exhausted. And so is my little brother.
“Just say you’re sorry, you asshole,” I grumble to myself. “It ain’t hard. You’re a cowboy. Own it when you’re fucking wrong.”
And then a sight worse than my memories hits me. The most beautiful woman I’ve ever seen in my life is in my bed. Wearing my goddamn jersey.
“Since you’re staying, you need things, don’t you? Can’t feed the chickens in sequins.”
And then I laugh. I laugh because Ford Montgomery is one of the best things I’ve ever felt.
“What is your problem, Country Boy?” You. You’re my problem. My incredibly beautiful, bratty little problem.
She jerks her arm back so fast you’d think I burned her. “No.” Her words are soft. Sad. “These are mine. I did that.”
“Yes,” she says. “I like pretty things. I know that makes me shallow, but I do.” “Nah,” I say. “It makes you, you. Hell, I’ve spent an entire paycheck on fishing lures.”
I reach into my back pocket and pull out my wallet. Her big green eyes get even bigger when I hold out my card. “What is this?” “My credit card. Go buy yourself whatever you want.”
Apologizing has never been my strong suit, but for this girl, I have the strong urge to get on my knees and do just that.
He’s also funny. It’s unfair and I hate it.
“I got you, baby.”
“Well, I’m pissed.” She wrinkles her nose. “I broke my eggs.”
“Rude,” she snaps. I spin her around. “You need a little rude in your life. You also need a goddamn spanking.” For a moment, only the sound of our ragged breaths. “Cut the tantrum shit out right now,” I growl. “And sit your ass down.” With a defiant huff of breath, she stares at me. “No.”
“Be a good girl and take it.”
“I’m going to fuck you like a cowboy, honey. Treat you like a princess.”
“You’ll know,” I whisper. “You’ll know when it’s time to go or stay, okay? So you just be brave and make your choice and we’ll still love you anyway.”
I’m just a stop on her tour. And she’s just a notch on my bed post. But I don’t know if I believe the lie anymore.
“Okay,” I say slowly. “Can I be sad with you?”
Before I can stop her, Dakota hits CD on the player. Fuck. Instantly, Reese’s sweet husky voice fills the cab.
You’re as handsome as the sunset, Country Boy. Grinning, I tuck it under the brim of my cowboy hat with the rest of the notes I’ve collected.
“What if you need help?” “With what, my patience?”
“I can’t be without you,” she whispers against my lips. I manage to tear my mouth from hers for a split second. Grip her fingers at my fly. “That your plan to win every argument?”
Leaning down, I smooth his unruly hair back. “Kiss me or I won’t come back for you.”
She’s out of my league, but I’m not worried about keeping up. Because I’m keeping her.
One thing is for sure, we’re both fucking idiots.
“Fuck, they’re too cute.” Fallon slams back her beer. “I’m lighting my house on fire.”
“He’s mine now,” Reese says, laying a protective hand on my chest. My mouth goes dry at the simple action. The love this girl’s shown me eclipses Savannah, any woman, by a country mile. “You had your chance.”
There’s no cure for that black hole—not love, not the ranch. Maybe my depression will be less here, or maybe it won’t. But Ford will be there with me every step of the way, reminding me I can save myself, like I’ve done this entire summer.
“Oh my gosh,” I breathe. “It’s a madhouse.” I look up at Ford. “I want one just like it.”
“That girl is the wind,” Stede says. “She’s going to ride the sky, and no one can stop her.”
