“I will, Bluebird,” he whispers back....

I step into him. Chill bumps cover my clammy skin and yet, I burn.
“Never. You’re mine, you hear me?”
Mine. His words decimate me.
The world stops. Inside, I burn. Feverish and warm.
“Baby, you think you’re not worth it, but you are.” His shallow breath warms my temple. “Say it.”
“You’re worth it, Reese.” Eyes locked on me, his chest heaves rhythmically up and down. “You’re worth me. You’re worth yourself.”
“You’re like the wild, baby. You’re always gonna burn, but you come back better than ever.”
His voice strangles. “You’re gold, Reese. You’re beautiful. You’re mine.”
I’m exactly where I’m supposed to be. Where I want to be. Here with Ford. This ranch. This life. Mine.
“It’s never been like this with anyone but you,” he rasps against my neck.
“Bluebird, you’re a goddamn dream.”
“I will never use it against you.” I drop a kiss to her lips. “I’ll take your worst day and give you my best. But I will always worry about you.”
DiFeo’s eyebrow lifts. “Write songs that you’d be proud to give the world, Reese. And be free.”
I always thought men like this were a country song soundtrack. Fictional. Too good to be true. But Ford’s heaven-sent. He’s funny, sweet, and patient. And he communicates.
Here. It’s where I’m supposed to be. Just me and Ford and broken hearts and broken pasts.
It’s like she’s come alive in front of my eyes. And I feel the same damn way.
She’s a damn good woman. And for the first time in a long time, I want to keep a woman. I want Reese.
Reese breathed her own kind of life into me with her first high-heeled stomp onto the ranch. Strutted her way into my fucking heart.
Suddenly temporary feels like bullshit. Feels like the biggest bullshit lie I’ve told myself.
I’m not helpless or crazy like Gavin has so often told me. I’m free. And I’m riding like the fucking wind.
“My dream girl,” he murmurs, kissing my palm with exquisite care. “You and me, meant to be.”
“Hush. You’re talking foolish, Ford.” “But I’m not, baby,” he says in his deep, drugged voice. “I dreamed about you, and you came true.”
I look at his large hand wrapped around mine, his calloused fingertips gently covering the scars on the inside of my wrist. I do. I love him.
My heart burns inside my chest. “That girl might turn around and set my whole life on fire.”
I squeeze my eyes shut, stroking her wild hair. “’Bout time you dropped the fucking attitude.”
“Tough,” she whispers. “It’s all yours.”
Joy. It’s all over her face. And it’s all I want to see for the rest of my damn life. I kiss her then. Hard. Hungry. The ride, the rush, Reese—I’m all in.
This fucking woman. I never thought a woman could hold my heart and break my soul, but here I am. Broken. In love. Whipped.
I see what she wants. To go after her. Like I always fucking will.
“Tell me this is real,” I rasp against her hair. It’s as close as I can get to saying those three little words. “Tell me.”
“It’s as real as the stars,” she whispers. Tentative green eyes flick to mine. “But stars go out.”
“Nah, baby. Not us.” She laughs as I haul her higher on my body. Her breasts draw my eye. Full and gorgeous and rosy. “We burn....

Because it takes a strong man to love Reese. Not because she’s hard to love, or she’s difficult, but because she’s the most amazing woman that I’ve ever known. She forces me to be better.
The fire in her eyes rages like a wildfire. “That’s right, baby, let that fire burn.” I spear her with a cocky grin. “And get it through that pretty little head of yours. You ain’t goin’ back.”
“And why’s that, Ford?”
I swear violently, and then drag her against me. “Because I love you, Reese. Can’t f...

“I’m crazy.” “You’re not, but I’m sane, so we’ll be okay.” That haughty chin lifts. “I cost too much money.” “Good thing I have it.” “We fight too much.” “And it makes me hard as hell,” I growl, causing her stunning green eyes to widen.
“Run your mouth, woman, because it doesn’t matter. I love you. Nothing you do or say will change my mind. You’re it for me, Birdie. No more running. No more searching. It’s you.”
“Do you see how much I love you? You brought me back to life, Bluebird.”
A sob escapes her. “You are my joy, Ford Montgomery.”
She’s here, she’s mine, and nothing can change that. Fucking nothing.
With that, Savannah disappears out the door and into the whipping wind. I dip my head, drawing Reese closer. Like I said, dream girl.
Her eyes soften, fill with tears. “Yes. I’ll marry you.” She touches my cheek, smiling. “You’re the greatest love song I’ve ever sung, Country Boy.”
“You and me, we got good bones, Bluebird. We’re never breaking. Swaying in the wind, maybe, sputtering through the snow, for sure. But busted and broken, never.” I swallow. “I don’t want to waste any more time. You have my heart, even on rainy days. And we’re gonna fight, because it’s in our fucking blood, but you’re the love of my damn life. Will you marry me, Reese? Will you let me give you everything you’ve ever wanted?”
We burn wild and free.
He’s my rock and I’m his peace. And together, whatever life throws our way, we take it together.
“You look like you love me, Country Boy,” I drawl, cupping his cheek.
