The theme of the book — the whole plot David has been telling himself he’s solely to blame for the death of Robert; that he was responsible for how everything turned out. When in reality, there were many lies told to him and uncontrollable factors that played a role into what happened. Most of them were not his fault. But what David fails to realize is that unfortunately events are not black and white. They don’t always fall onto one person. It’s a commentary of how empathetic people always take full blame or responsibility for things they didn’t necessarily do out of remorse for the other persons outcome.
