It’s true. I apologize way too much, but sometimes when I say “I’m sorry,” what I actually mean is “I’m sad for you.”
Fuck. All I do around her is want.
“It’s okay. I’m patient. I can wait until you’re ready.”
“Oh, Millie. I don’t want what friends do. I want much more than that with you.”
“It’s called Game of Firsts. We take turns asking each other about our firsts of something, and for every answer, you get a point. If you don’t want to answer, you lose a point. Winner makes the loser do a dare.”
“I have no doubt that if you saw him or had to talk to him, you could stand up for yourself all on your own. But if it makes you more comfortable, I could come with you the first time and be your cheerleader. Or your bodyguard. Or your coffee-cup holder while you punch him. I’ll be anything you want.”
“Pretty sure I was erasing that line as you were making it.”
“I’m not here to stifle you or control you or shape you into something else. I’m here to help you shine.”
“Hey,” I whisper. “He’s not worth it.” Micah’s eyes soften as they meet mine. “But you are.”
“I wish you could see how much you’ve done for us,” he whispers. “I’ve laid all the shattered pieces of myself in front of you over the last few months. All the broken fragments I’ve been trying to glue back together on my own. The grief and the pain and all my flaws and insecurities.” He cups my face in his palm. “But you weren’t afraid of it. In fact, you’ve been helping me put it all back together in little ways since I met you.”
“I don’t need the sun when you’re here, stella mia. You’re the brightest star in my universe, and I’ve been orbiting around you since you poured coffee all over me. I could spend the rest of my life watching you shine.”
