“I have no doubt that if you saw him or had to talk to him, you could stand up for yourself all on your own. But if it makes you more comfortable, I could come with you the first time and be your cheerleader. Or your bodyguard. Or your coffee-cup holder while you punch him. I’ll be anything you want.”
His eyes snap to mine. “Twilight?” he questions, brows almost to his hairline. “Of course I have Twilight,” I whisper-yell, crossing my arms.
“Um.” I raise my eyes to the ceiling and pretend to think over my schedule. “I have plans with a guy who isn’t grumpy and doesn’t scream at the sight of spiders.” His mouth twitches in amusement. “He sounds boring. Come out with me, instead.”
“Now let’s bake cookies and learn how to make voodoo dolls to hex him with.”
“I can’t believe you called my dad for his soup recipe,” she whispers against my chest. “I can’t believe you think I wouldn’t.”
