‘I always bring a book, just in case.’ ‘Just in case of what?’ ‘Just in case the person I wanted to see gets very busy doing his job and I have to wait to talk to him.’
There was nothing to explain when you wanted to have sex with your boyfriend. You simply both worked it into your schedules. Right?
He was summer and she was fall. He was adventure and she was comfort. But right now, on the cusp between the two seasons, in this liminal space they’d carved out for themselves, they fit just right.
‘Good job, skipper.’ He kissed the tip of her nose and Hazel blinked. She threw her arms around his neck and he let out a surprised laugh. ‘You saved us,’ she gasped. ‘It’s not actually that bad of a storm. I mean, I’ve sailed in worse.’ ‘Noah!’ She pulled away, filled with righteous indignation. ‘You. Saved. Us.’
‘Better, sweet girl?’
It would be hard to beat, but they had a lifetime to try.
