Hazel was doubled over in giggles and Noah would let Mac make fun of him all day just to keep listening to that sound.
Activity and noise and lights and bodies swirled around her, but Noah only saw her. It was as though everything else was blurred but Hazel was crystal clear.
He squinted up at her, using a hand to block the sun. ‘Do you like the beach yet?’ With you, I do. ‘I’m warming up to it.’
‘I always bring a book, just in case.’ ‘Just in case of what?’ ‘Just in case the person I wanted to see gets very busy doing his job and I have to wait to talk to him.’
It wasn’t hard to spot Hazel at the town meeting since she always sat in the same seat next to Logan and Jeanie and because Noah’s gaze seemed to find her no matter where she was in any room.
He was summer and she was fall. He was adventure and she was comfort. But right now, on the cusp between the two seasons, in this liminal space they’d carved out for themselves, they fit just right.
Her inner nerdy teenager was shrieking obnoxiously in her head. The cutest guy in town had given her his sweatshirt and she could barely stand it.
