She handed him his book and his fingers brushed against hers. She held his gaze for a breath and in that moment Noah could almost believe that she felt it too, the spark.
Activity and noise and lights and bodies swirled around her, but Noah only saw her. It was as though everything else was blurred but Hazel was crystal clear.
A cool breeze came in off the water and made the day comfortable instead of hot and Hazel could almost feel fall heading her way. Change was coming soon.
This moment right here, him and Hazel tucked together under his old beach blanket, this was the one that would haunt him.
‘I always bring a book, just in case.’ ‘Just in case of what?’ ‘Just in case the person I wanted to see gets very busy doing his job and I have to wait to talk to him.’
‘Happy reading,’ she said with a grin only to be met by Logan’s scowl. ‘It’s not for me.’ ‘Oh, don’t pretend you don’t read them when Jeanie’s not looking.’ The blush that rose above Logan’s beard told her she was spot on. ‘They’re very informative.’ Hazel laughed. ‘I bet.’
Maybe he should have played it cooler? Waited more than half a second to respond? He didn’t care. He wasn’t cool around Hazel.
Hazel was everything. Hazel was getting lost-in-your-favorite-book good, sun-on-your-face good, the-perfect-cup-of–coffee good.
