Another of those reasons why I was into him. It was clear he could take care of himself and any bad business that came his way, so in the end, if you were his, he could take care of you. No one had ever taken care of me. Not ever. In my entire life.
Something shifted in the way he was looking at me as I did. Something big and important and consuming. So much of all of that, it made me stop glaring and start staring, at the same time trying to get a handle on just what that shift was. He then muttered, like he was talking to himself, “Shit, I’m fucked.”
“Something else you should know about Jack and Rose.” I tensed at this intro, but prompted, “What?” when he said no more. “Jack did the right thing. Not because he was a guy, and she was a woman. But because he cared about her, and he gave everything just for a shot that she’d make it out alive.”
“This mean I’m finally out of your friend zone?” “I thought I was in your friend zone,” I whispered. “I’m a good guy, honey, but I don’t pull out my mom’s recipe for mushroom sage stuffing for a woman I consider a friend.”
“Two months?” “Jess, I’ve been waiting for an in from you since you made me your dragon fruit refresher. Which, I’ll confirm, is better than Starbucks.”
What you’ve been so fucking selfish you didn’t see was, I have issues too. And they don’t always involve you.”
“If you ever call me a tease again, I’m shooting you,” he muttered to mushrooms. I smirked harder.
“There weren’t any Rock Chicks left. But I’m seeing an Angel will do perfectly.”
“Quick draw. Impressed. But if you tase me, beautiful, when I come to, I’m kissin’ you,” he said, his head turned toward Harlow.
he whispered, “It’s not the nightie, Jessie. It was never the nightie. It was always the woman in the nightie.” Hang on. Wait. Oh my God. Did he just say that?
“This much more south, Savannah. She’s it. She’s the one I’ve been waiting for. She’s the one I would have left you for if I was still with you when I met her.”
“What’s his name?” Eric asked the staff member. “Homer,” she replied, and I went still. “But we call him the General because, when he’s in the community room, since he’s been here the longest, he keeps the other cats in line.”
“Well, fuck me, it’s The Expendables, the early years,” Titus remarked. I wanted to laugh, because it was funny, but I was too busy taking in Eric staring at me, lounging on a killer tan leather couch, drinking a martini. “I think they do this investigative shit a lot better than we do,” Mace muttered.
Alvarez didn’t answer my question. He muttered, “I am so screwed,” got right up and walked right out.
His lips tipped up. “Copy that, Wylde. My Christmas tree is massive and we’re decorating it this weekend with Luke and Ava and the girls.”
“Oh my fucking God,” Ava whispered scarily. “They’re not even close to dating age, and you’re already making them undateable.” “Start early, make sure the job gets done right,” Luke drawled.
“Listen to me, Jess,” she stated in full Rock Chick Advisory Mode. “Do not let them boggle your mind with their good looks and healthy rationing of orgasms. It doesn’t seem those orgasms will wear off when they’re happening.” Luke chuckled. Ava shot him a death glare and came back to me.
“Ugh! Mommy! Uncle Eric and Aunt Jess are like you and daddy!” Maisie complained. We looked to the living room. Shirleen was coming our way, saying, “I’ll help pass those around.” But my eyes had gone to Ava. She was cuddled into Luke but twisted to gaze over the back of the couch at me. She was smiling. She approved.
“Mace also told us part of our jobs was to watch you and your crew’s asses, so bonus is I get to keep an eye on you.” My smile turned upside down. My brother started laughing.
