I was buying a bagel at a deli, and he got in line behind me.
he came up behind me a few weeks ago when I was buying some gum at a newsstand.
It’s Kevin. Standing outside the glass door of the yoga studio, peering inside at me.
“Randy and I are moving in together!”
there’s something about him that makes me uneasy…
“We found another victim.”
“There was another hit in the database from about three years ago. Similar MO to the other two—the missing hair cut close to the scalp. Traces of DNA were found that match what we found in Bonnie’s apartment.” I stop short
“So,” Slug says slowly, “you finally killed that son of a bitch.”
“When we get rid of the body.” Slug flashes me an exasperated look. “Isn’t that what you called me to help you with?”
But the weirdest thing is how eerily calm he seems. I’m about to jump out of my skin, but Slug is cool as a cucumber.
How does he know the exact number of garbage bags he’ll need to line the trunk of his car for a dead body? Or maybe I don’t want to know the answer to that question.
It’s hard not to be bothered by the fact that Slug is so good at this.
And Slug isn’t good at anything.
I realize someone has been watching us. There is a figure standing on the sidewalk and they have seen our every move. Oh Jesus, it’s Alison.
My father’s body is buried in the ground in what looked like an abandoned hiking trail about ninety minutes away from here.
But Alison was right about one thing: I’m dangerous.
Daisy raises a tear-streaked face. “What are you talking about? How can anything possibly be okay? Alison is missing.”
I might be dangerous. But Slug is something far worse.
Tom hesitates for a split second. “My last name is Brewer.” What? “You told me your last name is Brown!” “No, it’s Brewer.”
His bio mentions an undergraduate education at Cornell University followed by medical school and a residency at the University of Pennsylvania.
I’m fairly sure Tom told me he was working at NYU.
“They found Alison.”
“They just pulled her body out of the river.”
The river. That’s where Slug wanted to throw my father’s body initially. It’s his favorite spot.
“She was mutilated,” Daisy manages.
she… It looks like she was tortured.” Like Brandi.
there was this girl who accused him of stalking her.”
assault charge too,
Besides, Jake told me they had unidentified, matching fingerprints at the two crime scenes. But if Randy’s fingerprints are on file, it couldn’t have been him.
I don’t know why she lied on my behalf. She knows he’s not at work.
“It’s not right that I only get to see you through a window.”
Suddenly, I am very glad Alison is gone. Slug was right—she was a problem.
This phone is solely for interacting with me.
“You’re my best friend, Tom, but I’m not going to jail because you can’t manage to do what needs to be done.”
