I care about the worried, exhausted look on her face, and struggling under the urge to fix every last problem in her life so she never feels this way again.

Taking care of her isn't something I want to resist.

I wince as the door closes with a heavy thud. She’s gone. And she’s taken all the warmth in the room with her.

He can’t stand the idea of anyone else having me.

Nine years ago, this woman followed her heart, even if it led her to ruin at my hands.

I haven’t bothered with museums, or traveled, or encountered many exquisite things beyond the limits of my imagination. It’s illogical, yet as I stand stock still watching Savvy Laurence gazing up at a display of bathroom sconces, I know she’s the most beautiful woman in the world.

There’s nothing I wouldn’t do to keep her. There’s no walking away from this, not for me. This woman is going to own me until the day I die, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

“You’re all I’ve been able to think about for weeks,”

“I’ve never wanted anyone like this. Only you. Last night, the thought of you with someone else”—my hold on her waist tightens—“wrecked me, baby. If you don’t feel the same, tell me to leave you alone. Tell me now, because the things I want to do to you aren’t decent, and once we start…”

Tonight, I’m not a man trapped by his own mind. I’m Savvy’s boyfriend. Hopefully. Maybe. If she’ll have me.

“Work-life balance is very important, Savvy. Would tying you to our bed and making you come until you pass out take your mind off things?”

There have been a handful of moments in my life when I thought I felt victorious. When I finished my first book. When I signed that first publishing contract. When I kissed Savvy for the first time. All those times were incredible, life-affirming even, but none of them compare to making her come apart on my fingers.

“I have a lot of frustration to burn off, baby,” he coos, leaning down to brush his lips over mine. “You’ll take it for me, won’t you? You’ll let me pound you into this mattress?”

There’s so much there. Love and hope and joy. My whole future, staring back at me.

“Watch me fuck you.”

“You’re on probation, for probably the rest of your life. Which might be shorter than you think, by the way. Savvy sometimes forgets to turn off the burners when she finishes cooking.”
