“But don’t they know you’re gay?” “Yes. But I’m a hockey player, and I make a lot of money.” And, because I’ve been told this on several occasions, I add: “Also, I’m very cute.” He laughs, an authentic one this time, and I smile. “It’s the dimples,” he informs me. “What is?” “What makes you very cute.” He points to his own, smooth cheeks. I turn my face away, slightly, trying to hide my grin.
One thing has become very clear during my week here—my roommate is very attractive and I have spent a lot of time noticing it.
“I’m watching your lover crush it on TV right now.” “Don’t say lover,” I cringe. She laughs. “They showed footage of the teams walking in and oh my god have you seen your man in a suit? He is caked up. They literally played a full thirty seconds of the back of him as he came inside. The media team knows what the people want.”
“Well, your prayers were answered because this time I brought home a boyfriend,” Sam says ironically. “What’s that?” “They’re together, Dad,” June explains, pointing at us. “Together together.” “That right?” He looks over at Sam, who I see stiffen slightly as though preparing for a blow. “Well, then, I don’t see how you could do much better than Troy Nichols, eh? Good for you, boy.”
June wanders in, yawning, and eyes me while she gets a mug. She leans a hip against the counter and takes a careful sip of coffee, turning to her brother. “If I was waking up to him looking like that every morning, I wouldn’t make it anywhere on time.” I choke, burning my mouth and launching into a coughing fit.
A blush steals across the bridge of his nose, and he looks adorably flattered. I reach out, brushing the pad of my thumb across the color. “Jesus, that’s cute,” I mumble, more to myself than anything. He flushes a deeper crimson, embarrassed. “Stop it.”
“I’m going to marry you, one day,” I say, into the dark room. Sam snorts, wrapping an arm around my chest. “Of course you are. But you’re going to have to ask me a lot nicer than that.”
