“Pain isn’t a competition,” I assure him. “There’s always enough to go around.”
His eyes flare in confusion for all of a millisecond before shadows explode around us, immediately devouring every speck of light in a sea of endless black I instantly recognize as home.
I was infatuated and enamored, and at the time, that rush of utter beguilement was what I knew of love.
“This will only ever be yours. You could leave me or even meet Malek, and it still would be. I’ve made my peace with knowing there’s no getting over you.”

“Denial and I don’t keep company.”
“If I loved you in the way you deserve to be loved, I’d ignore that you’re the only form of peace I’ve ever known and put a thousand miles between us because stable still isn’t whole.”
“I love you more than this city. Do not die defending it.”
“I’m so sorry.” Sympathy fills Mira’s expression. “But not sorry enough to lose you to your grief. You just have to start by getting up.”
