“You two totally broke it, didn’t you?” Ridoc asks on the edge of laughter.
Your king kidnapped our asshole of a prince, and there’s a large part of me that wouldn’t mind him staying here and annoying the shit out of you for the rest of his miserable life, but that would make things difficult back home for someone I have…complicated loyalty toward, so I’m going to need the prick back.”
“Now,” Xaden orders. “I have much more important things to see to this evening.”
Tairn drops his jaw and roars, the sound shattering every glass orb within a dozen feet of us and leaving my ears ringing. “Was that really necessary?” My right ear won’t work for a month. “No, but I found it amusing.”
The familiar weight of the orb is comforting in my hand, and I swear I can feel a hum, a swift rise in heat that I know is only in my head, but it’s soothing all the same.
He’s Xaden, but he’s…not. “Xaden?” I whisper. “It’s nothing. Really. I’ve had worse on a sparring mat.”
Guardians are no longer permitted to dedicate children in service to their favored deity. The decision to serve the gods for life must be made after the age of majority and of one’s free will.
“Violet,” Xaden whispers. “Her hair—” “I know.” I wobble, and he steadies me with a hand on my lower back.
“That wasn’t in my father’s book.” My stomach sinks with suspicion of how those stones became the shade they are and the ever-growing fear that Xaden may have met his match.
“But do you not yearn for temple? Usually the touch creates such longing that you can’t help but return.
“I still see us among your potential paths, should you decide to take it. Dunne will accept you. It is not too late to choose Her.”
“I only speak with those who best me,” Marlis interrupts. “And you are wasting my time, Amarali.” She hurls the word at me like an insult.
“I didn’t,” I answer, pivoting to face her. “You have no magic here for me to wield.”
“The same thing everyone in the isles craves.” She pauses and looks back over her shoulder. “Dragons.”
“The pain. The mess. Give it to me. I’ll hold it. I know that sounds ludicrous, but I’ll find a way.”
