Our heads whip right, and the silver-haired venin walks toward us, her purple robes billowing in the breeze.
Wait. She did…what? Lightning?
“Agreed,” Xaden says. “That’s far too casual a term for what we are.”
“Because you’re the only one capable of killing me.”
“She really, honestly hasn’t thought about you. At least not since the second she set eyes on me.”
“Did you love him?” The question is a low rumble of sound.
“Did you love him? Violet, you have to tell me.” The sharp edge of desperation in his voice does me in.
the sun catches on the amber flecks in Xaden’s eyes as he nods before walking away. Amber.
My blood. Looks like I get to fight after all.
“Mom.”
But if you think I’m going to leave the only woman I’ve ever loved to contract marriage with a woman I do not get along with, then the lack of wisdom is yours, not mine.”
Aaric’s gaze swings wildly toward Xaden. “He isn’t breathing!”
The cook’s knife is lodged in his side.
“There is no cure for me.” He presses a kiss to my forehead. “That’s why you have to become better than me. There’s only you.”
“With honor, love, and gratitude, we commend your souls to Malek.”
“You named a kitten Broccoli?”
“And you”—the male lowers his gaze to Andarna—“our very hope, have handed this human something far more dangerous to wield, haven’t you?”
“There is no cure.”
“I don’t understand. You’re our generation’s shadow wielder.” “Not anymore. Magic knows.”
“The man you love no longer fully belongs to himself.”
Tairn bellows, and his pain replaces mine.
The irids have come.
“Who bonded you first?”
“I want you happy and safe and thriving. I want you to live.” My voice breaks. “Even if it’s not with me.”
I throw myself at the wall where our bond should be. But it’s gone.
Theophanie has Mira.
She draws the blade across Mira’s neck and slits her throat.
No. The venin’s blade is lodged between her ribs in the vicinity of her heart.
“He’s a fucking precog,” I whisper in awe.
