“You know the last time someone wielded distance—” “Never said I did,”
“Sgaeyl didn’t even tell me. Chradh told Garrick.”
shadows don’t just jump; they flee. Well, that’s different.
You’ll learn how to keep your control while I find a cure.”
“Garrick’s a distance wielder, isn’t he?”
You. Garrick.” I tilt my head. “And I once thought I saw Liam…” “Wield ice,” Xaden says, stroking his thumb along my chin.
“Often enough to be sure Kaori can’t possibly have accurate records, but not too completely that anyone questions why I only present with one,” he answers. “Our dragons came looking for us. They knew what they were doing.”
I could tell he wasn’t being fully honest. He’s never been able to lie to me.
“She wielded lightning,” I whisper, and his brow furrows. “Xaden, I think we’re wrong. I don’t think they’re limited to lesser magics. I think maybe…they have signets, too.”
“Tairn removed a dozen of her neck scales, and Andarna left teeth marks in her tail.”
it’s so we’ll be found and raised by an elder, usually a Sage, but in rare cases a Maven may take interest.”
“Ask me when I turned, how I turned. Ask why only initiates bleed.”
We trade some of our autonomy in the exchange for unfettered access to power. Maybe you see it as a loss of our soul, but we aren’t burdened by conscience or weakened by emotional attachment.
Upon failure of three exams, Jesinia Neilwart has been removed from the adept path and stripped of all its responsibilities and sacred privileges as of January 15. Under protest, I transfer her command to Professor Grady at his over-authoritative request. —Official Records: Scribe Quadrant, Colonel Lewis Markham, Commandant
“You should. And I bet the thought of seeing a certain scribe made the hour tolerable.” A smile pulls at Rhi’s mouth to my right.

“Relax, Violet.” Ridoc takes the seat next to Sawyer. “It’s not like the fate of our world rests on you finding whatever’s left of the irids.” He rubs the back of his neck. “Do you guys think it’s short for iridescent?” “Yes,” the three of us simultaneously reply. “Damn. Let’s go back to picking on Sawyer.”
“I’m petitioning Grady to be on the quest squad,” Ridoc says, signing as Jesinia reaches us.
“You didn’t have to walk all the way down here,” she signs, and Ridoc translates. “I would have come to you.” “I. Wanted. Here,” Sawyer signs slowly.
“They kicked her out of the adept program. Made up some bullshit tests they knew she’d fail.”
“I’ve been given the one assignment with which they know I can be trusted—helping you with research. Well, officially under Grady, but it’s really you.”
“Three more classes?” Ridoc moans, and the sentiment is echoed around the room. “On top of quest squad research?” He glances my way. “I’m only halfway through the first Deverelli text as it is.” A smile pulls at my mouth that he’s jumped in with both feet, regardless of knowing there’s absolutely no chance
It has now been confirmed by three different sources that high-level venin—we believe Sage and Maven—can and do wield signets.”
“I’m more concerned that he might not give it to me,” I say slowly. “He mentioned last year that he wanted it, and I’m scared he’ll keep it for himself, or that he or Markham will redact the information.”
The hair rises on the back of my neck. There’s a flash of something…cold in his eyes, but it’s gone with a single blink. Huh.
no hint of a cure or mention of a dragon ever torching a venin like Andarna did.
Dragons are taking their time when it comes to channeling.
“I’m either completely in love with your boyfriend or utterly terrified of him,” Ridoc says under his breath. “Not sure at the moment.”
no one knows the strongest threads are always my own. If you can sort through them, feel their difference, you’ll be able to track where I am in the darkness.”
“You have to learn the difference for both our sakes.”
“You need to be able to find me.”
“Because you’re the only one capable of killing me.”
“Better than one of them manifesting as an inntinnsic,” Ridoc mutters.
“I personally prefer Zihnal,” Ridoc adds. “You can get through any situation with luck.”
“It’s just going to require you to trust me enough to let me retrieve the research and bring it out myself.
I weigh the pros and cons in less than a heartbeat,
Your mother and I trust no one, and neither can you.

There’s an enemy who thinks I’m going to come to her
It’s a six-letter lock,
“Are we wasting time by overthinking this? It’s obviously Lilith, right?”
but what about Violet?”
“Fine, then who was Brennan’s first love?” Ridoc asks as we near the bottom of the steps.
he’d been in a relationship with a rider a year or two
older than him.”
“The one Violet’s father left her that everyone seems to think might have some information about where Andarna’s kind went,”
“Hello, who is your first love?” Oh, that’s not happening.
“My father couldn’t stand the first guy I really dated and never knew about the second.” Aaric turns his entire torso around to look at me. “How many letters?” I narrow my eyes. “Six.”
