“For the next few minutes, I only want to hear four words from you. Harder, softer, faster, and slower. Got it?”
“Oh, come on. Don’t be like that, Boo. I bet it was pretty scary and got your heart racing.” I give him my best side eye. What is he… “I’m jealous of your heart because it’s pumping inside you, and I’m not,” Saylor whispers next to my ear, and a laugh breaks out of me just as Nash walks back up to stand in front of me.
“Can I keep you?” I ask, my soft voice cracking with emotion as my eyes well up too. “As long as I can keep you.”
“That’s Saylor. He’s my other little brother. North is the oldest. He’s thirty-five now. I’m thirty-three, Saylor is…” Hunter looks thoughtful, furrowing his brows, but then continues, “… thirty, and Nash is the baby at twenty-five.”
I’m not just a bystander. I’m becoming a part of their story and determined to make it a better one for Saylor from here on out. I can’t undo the past, but maybe, just maybe, I can be a part of the healing, a part of moving forward for him.
They only confirmed what I knew all along. Nobody wants to deal with my kind of crazy. And when push comes to shove, I’m on my own.
“Siren, wait!” “Shortcake, please!” “Blue!” I don’t even turn or slow my brisk walk as Saylor and I make our way toward the exit, only putting up my finger and flipping them off over my shoulder. “The crazy one is done with you.”
