“I’m a Sagittarius, a photographer, a coffee lover.
“Soul bonds are a real thing. There are connections that are stronger than life and death,”
“Oh, come on. You looked like you were bored, so I thought I’d give you another one of my amazing pick-up lines. So tell me, do you believe in love at first sight?”
“Anyway, if you didn’t believe in love at first sight, I would just walk past again,” he finishes.
“Are you geometry? Because you look good at every angle,”
I don’t know what she’s pleading for, but I would give her all of me right here, right now. A kidney? Sure, take it. You know what, take the leg I have left. I don’t need it anyway.
“Hunt is the kind of guy you want by your side when shit goes down. The guy I would leave my girl with when I couldn’t be there, so I’ll do just that.” He grins before he vanishes.
“Are you Google? Because you’re everything I was searching for.”
“I just didn’t want that guy to have it or for it to be lost in his damn boat,” I tell her, meaning every word. “I would love for you to have it, though.” You can have all of me.
“Hey, girl, are you a coffin? ’Cause I’ve been dying to get inside you.”
Nope. Nah-uh, Sloan, you are not going to get all worked up over a ghost.
As I quickly reattach the loose battery cable, I don’t say a word, my fingers deftly working the connection back into place. With a satisfying click, the car is ready to start again, and I close the hood with a thud. Before North can say anything else, I turn on my heel and flip him off over my shoulder as I yell, “You’re welcome!”
“Hey, Boo,” he whispers affectionately, his expression soft, effectively turning my remark into a pet name I don’t like.
“I’m jealous of your heart because it’s pumping inside you, and I’m not,” Saylor whispers next to my ear, and a laugh breaks out of me just as Nash walks back up to stand in front of me.
“Can I keep you?” I ask, my soft voice cracking with emotion as my eyes well up too. “As long as I can keep you.”
“We have each other. I’ve got you, and I swear I won’t hurt you. Not today, not tomorrow, never. Isn’t that enough?”
“It’s not your fault. I’m just… jealous because he can give you things I can’t. He can hold you for real,”
“When I think about you, I touch myself.” She lets out a short breath in reply, but I can see the side of her mouth turn up slightly before she counters, “Yeah, me too. I rub my temples because you give me a damn headache.”
“Here, you need to hold this,” he tells me, holding out his hand curled in a fist, concealing whatever is in it. I assume he wants to give me another piece of sea glass, so I reach out my hand. Instead, he uncurls his fist and interlocks his fingers with mine.
So, I tell her the only thing that matters. “I love you.” Nan’s voice fades like a distant lullaby. “I’m only a whisper away.”
silence. “Hey, Boo.” It’s a voice I never thought I’d hear again. I turn my head and see him sitting next to me. Saylor.
“We keep each other, Boo. You never have to worry about me being gone forever,” he whispers,
“Hey, Say,” Jessica whispers. “Jess.” Saylor smiles sadly at her. “Save a spot for me, will you?” “There’s always space for you where I am,” she promises.
The decision to leave isn’t sudden. It’s a realization that comes with a crushing finality. I can’t be the anchor when I’m already drowning, nor the lighthouse when my own light is flickering on the verge of being snuffed out.
They only confirmed what I knew all along. Nobody wants to deal with my kind of crazy. And when push comes to shove, I’m on my own.
“Siren, wait!” “Shortcake, please!” “Blue!” I don’t even turn or slow my brisk walk as Saylor and I make our way toward the exit, only putting up my finger and flipping them off over my shoulder. “The crazy one is done with you.”
