The most offensive and damaging passage in the gospels is, in fact, in Matthew, sometimes cited as the most ‘pro-Jewish’ text in the New Testament. This occurs when, after Pilate washes his hands, ‘the people’ exclaim: ‘His blood be upon us and on our children’,134 because this explicitly shows Jews accepting the death of Jesus as a burden to be borne by their progeny.
