His whole demeanor changes. He suddenly appears soft and vulnerable, his face younger, more hopeful. As if he can read my thoughts, he quickly turns his head and looks out the window. For the first time since we've been together, the silence between us is not uncomfortable.

Today is a special day for him. He's spending it with me. Goosebumps shiver down my spine. I have to remind myself not to lose my head. All of this could be a game for him, a trivial pastime. Only God knows - or the devil - what plan he's pursuing.
