Ava’s usually pretty face looked super-stressed, as if worried she was going to be abandoned.
After everything he’d been through—we’d been through—my biggest goal was to see Dad happy again. He deserved it more than anyone, and I was going to support him all the way.
“I didn’t want to leave until I knew you were on your way.” He shrugged, as if his consideration was no big deal, even though it meant the world to me.
Despite that, his attempts seemed to work, and his smile was every bit as comforting as my childhood blankie.
He smelled so good. Nothing I could put into words, but it was exactly the way I hoped my summer boyfriend would smell.
It was as if Colton and his dad were my guardian angels.
Ava’s smile spread across the entire width of her face, and it was satisfying we’d caused it.
There was no denying she looked hot, and it felt like I’d been let in on a secret, because I was positive the guys back home didn’t know she scrubbed up this good.
Ava had always been one of the prettier girls in our grade, but she looked different.
“Because I had a dumb idea,” I answered. “But it doesn’t matter now.” “I love dumb ideas.” Colton gave me a playful grin. “Tell me.”
He laughed. “That’s why you look so hot tonight? You’re trying to snag that other person?”
She looked the part with the huge backpack and with her DSLR camera dangling around her neck. Well, dangling when she wasn’t using it to photograph everything in sight. She explained she was entering a photography contest, but the grin on her face suggested it was more that she was excited to be here and would have been snapping away, regardless.
I hadn’t wanted to wait, because in that moment, Ava looked beautiful. Her light brown eyes sparkled, and even though she’d claimed to be using an old photography trick, I could tell her grin was real.
“A nickel for your thoughts,” Colton said. “A whole nickel?” He nodded. “Inflation. What can you do?” I laughed, and Colton gave me that gorgeous smile of his that somehow made my worries melt away.
loved the excitement in her eyes when she talked about photography, and I wanted to share that with her.
I’d discovered that squash was a strong fruit flavored juice drink, diluted with water, and available in about a thousand varieties.
Ava’s eyes were light brown, but with the dappled sunlight slipping through the leaves above us and hitting her irises, they shone with brighter golden hues. So beautiful.
And now I was looking at her lips. Her full, pink lips.
I reached my free hand up to her forehead, gently lifting away some stray strands of hair that were slicked down, close to getting in her eyes.
“Softest as in good for photography?” Ava nodded. “It’s the golden hour.”
DZ400.
She looked so happy. Happy and beautiful. I guess I’d noticed at the time, but things were different now. She took my breath away.
I wanted to compliment her, tell her how pretty she looked in her dress. And how she smelled incredible too, but I had the good sense to keep my mouth shut.
Colton loosened his fingers, removing any resistance to me pulling my hand away, but I didn’t move a muscle. And neither did he.
I could’ve gone right back to sleep if I’d tried, but instead my mind was occupied with the memory of holding Ava’s warm hand.
Just being in his company made the rest of the world, and all its troubles, fade away.
“Or there’s the other option. Me.” Ava swallowed. “Are you an option for me, Colton?” “Yeah.” I lowered my voice, keeping my eyes locked on hers. “I am.”
“We thought so, and considering how much you’re always together, it would be wrong to exclude her.”
“Is this seat taken?”
“I’m here.” I straightened my face, composing myself as best I could. “Tell me everything.”
“I only won one category, though.”
“One category’s still a win. We need to celebrate.”
Impressive. My girlfriend had skills. I snuck a look at my phone. Nothing. I was eager to tell Ava our news, but I promised Dad I’d wait for him to give me the go-ahead.
