To you. My hope is not that you finish this book but that this book finishes you.
He was ethereal.
My breath hitched the second I felt her skin.
She was incandescently beautiful. The kind of beauty you hear of but never witness. The kind that crawls inside your mind and haunts you until it destroys everything and consumes your soul.
“May your death be fast…for both our sakes.”
My eyes immediately searched for Mendax, although I’m not sure why.
I stared at him. His gentleness was a weapon I hadn’t seen him wield, not even to his mother.
“Until this moment, I didn’t know you could crave something you’ve never wanted.” His voice was thick like honey.
“I am plagued by you.” Another light swipe of his tongue. “I am vexed with the thought of you constantly.”
“He likes you, we can tell. The prince—it’s like he’s numb all the time. Never changes expressions or seems to feel unless he is killing.” Her round bark-colored eyes sparkled. “But he feels with you, his eyes dance when he looks at you, and he is constantly watching you.
“Because if you’re not dead, I fear I will leave everything to follow you.”
What would it feel like to kiss that wicked mouth? Something in my gut warned me it would be like a drug—that it would feel like magic until every part of me was ripped apart, unable to collect the pieces.
“You assume I’d be easily found if—” “I would find you,”
“If you die tonight and I never get to tell you, you are the most beautiful thing I have ever seen.”
I knew in that very moment I was so deeply in love with her, and she would be the one thing capable of my demise. The weak point in my unbreakable armor. I stared at her, and it scared me to death. It scared me to death what I wouldn’t do for her.
“How does it feel?” he said, breathing heavily. “To know that I love you and that you have doomed me? That you and only you have the power to disarm and debilitate me. That you, a human, have dismantled every part of me and rebuilt it as a shrine in your honor.”
“It will not hurt me, little lamb. You are the only thing that could hurt me now,”
“You were never supposed to mean this much to me,” he rasped, shaking his head.
“I am the bad guy, Callie.” He pulled away from my lips just enough to lay his whisper upon them, never opening his eyes. “Which is why you will never, ever be free from me again.”
