It didn’t like when I made noises. When I made noises, it woke up. It had told me they would hurt me again if I made any more noise.

Blackness immediately consumed me as my eyes shut so tightly that tiny flecks of light speckled the back of my eyelids. The hard stone wall dug into my flesh. I pressed harder, willing it to swallow me up so I would no longer be inside the fear-laced cell of this dungeon. Had I caused him to wake? A few stray tears escaped my eyes as my body trembled. Fuck. Fuck. I shook so hard, I threatened to wake him simply with the rattle of my bones. Be quiet or it will wake and hurt you again.

My grip on the leather steering wheel tightened at the thought of Cliff, but I quickly brushed it away. In truth, we had never even been on a date, and we never would.

Amanita muscaria. They were poisonous mushrooms that, if eaten in small enough quantities, might not kill you but made you act out of sorts…like Crazy Earl.

Sometimes he reminded me so much of my best friend from back home. Something about the friendly smile, or the charismatic attitude he carried, always made me think of Eli.

“Whatever you want,” he said as he abruptly slammed the shifter into drive. “Stacy Perkins has been dying to see my honey hole…and I kinda wanna see hers too.” He grinned childishly, his stare holding mine a moment too long.

As I collected an exceptionally bright and beautiful mushroom, a tiny glowing bug stood beneath it. Only, once I had moved closer in an attempt to get a better view of the odd bug, I realized it wasn’t a bug at all. Stunning golden wings fluttered behind the tiniest person I’d ever laid eyes on. I had read the tales my mother gave me, they were some of my favorites, and I knew I had found a fairy.

the bird had transformed into an entirely different creature. Though about the same size as the large bird, this creature was more human than not. It had a similar build to the golden fairy, but instead of beautiful delicate butterfly wings, this creature carried inky black wings that looked to be made of macabre black smoke. The wings seemed to be longer than they were wide and were attached more to her shoulders than her back. The wings, no less beautiful, were different in their own right. Everything about the creature was. Where the golden fairy had oozed happiness and smiles that made me ...more

It was still early morning. The beautiful birds chirped and sang their happy wake-up calls of tweets. The grass held drops of dew along with the orange blanket of a rising sun. The unmistakably crisp morning scent clung to the air like a promise, a whisper of fresh stars and pine.

“That’s the best compound field scope available! Do you know the things I…ugh…you could see with that!? It has a double-layered mechanical stage! Four objective lenses! I could finally test them!” He was close to screaming now. If he hadn’t looked so happy, it would have been incredibly frightening. “Would I be able to borrow it just once? Of course, if you’d like to come, that would be even better. My eyes aren’t what they used to be, and I’m going to catch them this time.” He stared off absently.

“I saw some of the most peculiar things when collecting data for this odd mushroom. We tried to cultivate it with no success. It has yet to turn up anywhere else but here.” Immediately, curiosity trickled into my system. “I have seen things from the areas where they fruit that would make you fear the woods. It’s as if something inhuman floats around it.”
