A chill overcame my body as I ran my fingers over the small tooth that hung from my neck. The molar was hers. She had spit it at me in all her fiery magnificence in the blood room. I had pocketed it without thinking. Then later, arguably still not thinking, I had it made into a souvenir to wear always. A memento from this enchantress to remember long after she was dead. She could not live, but already I feared I would not draw breath without a part of her near.
The thought of being the one—the only one—to control and feed that fire sent an absolute inferno through my mind, taking with it every sane thought I had held.
If I weren’t careful, I would do something very, very stupid. Like let her live.
“Get the fuck away from me, Mendax!”
“Say it again,”
“What!?”
“Say my name again.”
“Fuck you!”
“Say it, Callie. I want to hear the way it sounds from your filthy mouth.”
“Fuck you, Mendax!”
“Very good girl,”
“I am plagued by you.”
“I am vexed with the thought of you constantly.”
“I beg the old gods that listen”—another
that they will rid you from my system after today.”
“Mendax!”
“Mendax! Oh god! Me—”
“Say it again, pet. Remind the gods exactly who you have bewitched.”
“I still hate you,”
“I still want to kill you . . . maybe more now,”
“If you are on Mendax’s side, then why do you root for me?”
he never laughs or smiles, never has. He is completely unable to feel anything but hatred.”
“He likes you, we can tell. The prince—it’s like he’s numb all the time. Never changes expressions or seems to feel unless he is killing.” Her round bark-colored eyes sparkled. “But he feels with you, his eyes dance when he looks at you, and he is constantly watching you. If . . . if he bonded with you, then he could ascend and take the throne as king!”
“Oh, there are plenty of women who have tried desperately to claim him, he has never entertained one that we are aware of. He says he will never bond to another and share his powers and will never become king.”
“The prince said that the guards were futile. That he would find you easily and enjoy the hunt should you try to escape.”
“Will you truly let me go home if I survive the trials?”
“Believe me, pet, when I tell you I want you gone—I need you gone,”
“Then just send me away now. Why kill me?”
“Because if you’re not dead, I fear I will leave everything to follow you.”
“You assume I’d be easily found if—”
“I would find you,”
“If you die tonight and I never get to tell you, you are the most beautiful thing I have ever seen.”
If she didn’t die soon, I feared she would be my greatest weakness, and I couldn’t afford to have any weaknesses, especially not with the throne open.
I had always wanted to feel something—anything. Then out of nowhere, this human sparked a fire of need inside me where it once had been empty and cold.
Gods alive, she was stunning when she let that fire flow. There was a darkness in her that fueled her flame, and I felt it with my soul.
Something uncomfortable bloomed in my chest with her disapproval of bonding to me. I strongly disliked it.
She was mine now.
Aurelius downright gawked as his eyes found Callie behind me. I watched as pure desire flooded his golden eyes. His flaxen-feathered wings popped out from behind his back, startling his brother and everyone else in the room as he stared at my pet.
A male Fae’s wings only appeared when they wanted to fuck or fight.
Darkness shadowed the light as my own wings snapped out. I stepped in front of Callie, and the action drew Aurelius’s stare to me with a small smirk as he and his brother walked to the ...

Seeing the other male touch her sent a thundering crackle of rage through me like nothing I’d ever felt. Every vein in my body vibrated with the unbridled need to get him away from her. What if they took her away from me?
Letting out a snarl, I grabbed Langmure’s head and ripped it from his body.
I would not let them have her. War or not.
It made me feral seeing him attempt to shield her from me. She was mine. He was the only one I would hurt.
“We are bonded,”
“What?”
“We are bonded. NOW mother! ...

“No! Please! Stop!”
I didn’t care. Even if only for a few hours of my life, she would be mine in every way. My heart squeezed unfamiliarly at the thought of her being tied to me for the rest of her short life.
“We are bonded,”
