People aren’t happy or sad, they are not angry and then calm. They’re all at once. Certain experiences can bring one to the forefront, but they’re all inside of us. The wolf is always inside of me. When I change, I just call the wolf to the forefront."
"Why do you keep saying that? That you’re dead," Lucia questions. Adelaide pulls her down to the couch, and Lucia is aware of the vampire’s heat and the way their legs almost touch. Adelaide turns, bending her knee so she’s facing Lucia. "I am dead. In the ways that matter."
"It’s comfortable," Adelaide says. "And there’s no way you’re getting in my bed in that bloody monstrosity."
She’s reclaiming her power. And sometimes, you have to lose people to do that."
"Not love. I’m afraid of the piece in between. The parts before and after falling. The unknown and then… stuck. I don’t think—once you’ve fallen in love—you can ever be free. As you said before, Giuseppe believed there to be worse things than death. He died when he lost Corseia, and I don’t think that’s a fate anyone deserves."
"And those eyes… so warm and kind. Sad eyes. You don’t wish for anyone to feel the pain that you have."
Kuai-yuel—my moon.
"Lucia." Adelaide stops her, winding their fingers together. "I can feel everything. My senses are heightened as a vampire. The sound of your racing heart, the smell of your arousal… the grooves of your palm against my stomach, your fingerprint etched into my skin. I feel it all. It isn’t nothing, and it is anything but familiar to me. Everything about you and what you make me feel is so new."
You, my mother, the one who gave me life, were my first bully. You are the one who made me hate myself and made me feel like I was not worthy of love or respect."
Lucia’s lips come to Adelaide’s ear, whispering slowly, quietly, pouring her heart into the words. "I… love… you."
"I am. I’m fine, Siphon. It’s you I’m worried about. You have so much to live for. Someone told me life doesn’t have to end after death. Neither does yours. Please, Siphon, please. I need you; you can’t leave me. I have so much to tell you. I—I met a girl. She’s so beautiful. And kind, very kind. Better than me. I know I never take anything seriously, but I truly, truly love her." Siphon smiles slowly. "The witch?" Adelaide nods. "You deserve to be happy, Adelaide. You deserve love. I hope you can keep it."
