“Are they really in love?” I asked, hating how horrified I sounded. “So quickly?” “It’s been a month.” “A month! How could they know in a month?” “Sometimes, it only takes a heartbeat to know.”
My heart ached thinking about a future without him, so I did the only thing I could. I laid my future in God’s hands, where it had always belonged, and prayed for a miracle.
“If our friends abandon us, then they aren’t truly our friends. And if our enemies don’t gloat, then they aren’t truly our enemies. We will survive this crisis, like all the others, Marian. And we’ll do it with God’s help.”
And if I live to be one hundred, I will never tire of offering grace and forgiveness to anyone who asks it of me, because how could I deny it to someone when it’s a gift that God gave freely to me?”
I saw the hand of God in my life and knew, with certainty, that He had brought me to this time and place. My life hadn’t been a curse, but a blessing, one I wanted to share with the people I loved.
