What’s wrong with wanting to feel loved and treasured, and wanting the most important people in your life to also feel loved and treasured? Why does our society insist on pushing children away from their families? Why must we all become islands of independence at eighteen? Rude!

She pushed me away. “Whatever you’re doing. Stop it. I can’t think if you look at me like that.” I shrugged. “Seems fair. I can’t think when I’m looking at you.”

I wanted a relationship with my dad more than I wanted to be right about being wronged.
